The operator has apparently agreed to comply with the requirements, described as 'strict' by most reports, and to limit production to current levels. The lease - within land designated as 'potential wilderness' under the 1976 Point Reyes Wilderness Act, according to the Commission's Order - is scheduled to expire in 2012. It is expected that full wilderness status and protection will be commenced at that time.
";
var text2      = "
Protected!

Despite reported claims by the oyster farm operator that kayakers (and hikers?!) cause the greatest disturbances in the Estero, the entire area has actually been closed to such recreational watercraft during the pupping season (March to July) in recent times.

And, groups such as BASK (Bay Area Sea Kayakers) have spearheaded attempts to spread seal-friendly paddling practice among all recreational kayakers and canoers. These efforts have shown clear results.

From its mouth on the Pacific to the back of its many coves, this 2000 acre estaury is estimated to be the birthplace of nearly 20% of all harbor seals in California. It is shielded from most significant disruption at that time other than the effects of massive aquaculture (300,000 pounds of shucked oysters and a million clams yearly are reported) on 1000 leased acres within it.
";
var text3      = "
Wild and Remote!

Drake's Estero is the sole body of coastal waters in California within the Federal Wilderness Preservation System. Its trememendous extent can be only seen on foot after long hikes, by paddling within it, or from the air.

Just as access is difficult, so is enforcement of use regulations placed upon a commercial enterprise such as the oyster farm. Fortunately, violations are virtually impossible to hide from reconnaissance flights and satellites, especially when these are verified by observers on the ground.

Map graphic by Matthew Trump
GNU Free Documentation License.
";
