Protection of the harbor seal colony at the GGNRA was the impetus for this website. A year ago, public access to the haulout area and pupping site was closed. This spring, superb informational signs have been placed at the two main overlooks above the rocks and beaches below the broad, paved trail.
Regular monitoring by volunteers for the National Park Service documents a uniquely observable yet protected habitat within sight of the Golden Gate Bridge and the San Francisco skyline.

Long recognized as one of the world's pre-eminent seal Rescue, Rehabilitation, and Release facilities, The Marine Mammal Center has expanded their 'Fourth R' program of Research. Seeking greater insight into the baseline presence of disease and environmental stress on wild harbor seal populations, the Center has been given permission to capture, test, tag and release a greater number of young, presumably typical animals.
With expanded public awareness and support, the potential benefits to care of the hospital's patients and the maintenance of healthy wild colonies are immense.

Protection efforts for the La Jolla seals have moved through municipal councils and state courts to this newest attempt to create a 'Marine Reserve' under the provisions of the California Marine Life Protection Act. Despite setbacks and even threats of violence (see March 2008 ALERT), volunteers from diverse organizations, coalitions, and interest groups continue to organize to achieve their common goal of maintaining a secure environment for the colony.
