The Ocean Alaska Science and Learning Center has maintained a remote harbor seal monitoring facility at the Alaska Sea Life Center since 2002. Using the most modern video equipment with microwave transmission links, researchers have been able to maintain nearly continuous observation of sensitive harbor seal sites within the Kenai Fjords National Park.
Supported by a broad partnership of public, private, and business institutions, and investigating the sudden decline in populations of the species throughout Alaskan waters, the monitoring project is the most intensive of its kind anywhere.

Not only are harbor seal habitat changes and behaviors recorded, human interactions and disturbances are documented as well. Appropriate wildlife-watching guidelines for the region have been adopted by Park users, while management strategies have been prepared based upon the project's findings.

Following scrupulously scientific protocols for observation, recording, and data analysis, the Learning Center has documented its results and conclusions in publications distributed to the public and in papers for the scientific community. Acting in concert with other research institutions, it continues to advance the understanding of marine mammals in general and the protection and conservation of harbor seals in particular.
