Remote intertidal haulouts in the Point Reyes National Seashore cannot accommodate both uses. Bags displace seals. And harvesting boats used to install and maintain the oyster apparatus have been documented disturbing mother seals and their pups.

Photo courtesy National Park Service.
Used by permission.
";
var text2      = "
Sustainable?
One important component of the Drakes Estero wild habitat is the native eelgrass beds, which provide cover, feed, and a nursery area for multiple species. Hundreds of channels cut into the eelgrass by boat propellers from the oyster operations may significantly alter eelgrass coverage. The potential long-term harmful consequences for harbor seals, the only year-round resident marine mammal in the Estero, can only be estimated.

Photo courtesy National Park Service
Used by permission.
";
var text3      = "
Undisturbed?
The harbor seal population of Drakes Estero has been studied continuously for several decades by professional wildlife biologists and trained citizen-scientists. Recorded disturbances to resting and breeding seals increased dramatically in 2007, and oyster bags have been located on sandbars where seals would normally give birth and nurse their pups. One area has seen an 80% decline in use by seals!

Photo by Jamie Hall
Used by permission.
";

As a Federal Statute, it is superior to state laws, permits, or leases. Harbor seals deserve the full protection of the Act, even when it conflicts with local commercial interests.

Photo by Jamie Hall
Used by permission.
";
